THE PROCESS OF DRIVER’S EDUCATION FOR A-CERTIFICATION (MOTORCYCLE LICENSE)

Apply for a study permit

The first thing a student needs to do is to apply for a study permit at a District Commissioner (Sýslumaður). You can find the application form here (only in Icelandic).

Choosing a driving instructor

You must contact a motorcycle driving instructor to arrange the practical part of the training.

Written-material motorcycle course

The next step is to complete a written motorcycle course. You can take the course online at our driving school by clicking here. Note that the written course expires in two years.

Written test

After completing the written course, we will send you a confirmation of completion, and you can start preparing for the written exam. The exam is carried out by Frumherji. You can reserve time for the test by clicking here. Note that if you pass the written test, you will have 6 months to complete the practical test.

Practical training

After having completed the written exam, you must arrange practical training with your driving instructor. The general minimum is 11 training sessions (each session 45 minutes) before the practical test (certification classes A2 and A).

Practical test

Your driving instructor will schedule the driving exam. The exam involves both an oral exam (questions) and driving.

CLASSES OF MOTORCYCLE CERTIFICATIONS AND AGE LIMITS
AM-certification
The minimum age is 15 years. The course “Driving School 1” must be completed along with 8 sessions with a driving instructor, as well as written and practical exams at Frumherji. The AM-certification applies to a light motorcycle with an engine not exceeding 50cc and with maximum speed not exceeding 45 km/h.
A1-certification
The minimum age is 17 years. The written course is not required for those with a driving license for automobiles. Only 5 training sessions with a driving instructor are required, as well as written and practical exams at Frumherji. The A1-certification grants rights to drive a motorcycle with an engine not exceeding 125cc.
A2-certification
The minimum age is 19 years. A 12 hour written course is required as well as a minimum of 11 sessions with a driving instructor. Written and practical exams at Frumherji are also required. The A2-certification grants rights to drive a motorcycle with power not exceeding 35 kw (47 hp). Drivers with a minimum of 2 year experience of driving motorcycles with this certification (A2) will only need a practical (driving) test to acquire A-certification.
A-certification
The minimum age is 24 years except that drivers with A2-certification can acquire A-certification with 2 years of driving experience. In that case a practical exam (driving test) is sufficient. Drivers acquiring A-certification as their first motorcycle certification will be required to complete a written course and a minimum of 11 driving sessions with an instructor. Written and practical exams at Frumherji are also required.
